U.S. federal government shutdown continues
The shutdown began October 1 after Congress failed to pass funding legislation. Around 900,000 federal employees are furloughed or working without pay.
Essential services continue (e.g. Medicare, Social Security), but many agencies (CDC, NIH, Education, EPA) are partially or fully impacted.
The political standoff is largely over Affordable Care Act subsidy extensions and budget priorities.
