We begin in artificial intelligence, where OpenAI is slowing portions of its work on an advanced model known as Astra because of cybersecurity concerns.
Reports say internal evaluations raised the possibility that Astra could develop what OpenAI considers critical cyber capabilities. That classification could include the ability to identify serious software vulnerabilities or assist with complicated operations against highly protected computer systems.
OpenAI has not ended the Astra project. Instead, the company is temporarily stopping internal activities that do not meet newly strengthened security requirements. Approved work will move forward under tighter controls, including isolated testing environments, restricted network access, encryption, and expanded monitoring.
The company’s decision follows growing concern throughout the AI industry about autonomous systems gaining the ability to exploit security weaknesses or move outside the environments designed to contain them. OpenAI says it intends to continue working with governments, security institutions, and outside experts while evaluating the model.
In other technology news, Google has revealed additional details for its upcoming Made by Google presentation.
The event will take place on August 12 in New York City and will begin at six o’clock Eastern Time. Comedian and former late-night host Trevor Noah will lead the presentation.
Google’s announced guest lineup also includes NBA star Stephen Curry, media personality Alex Cooper, Indian cricket star Shubman Gill, and Japanese actor and model Ayami Nakajo.
The event is expected to focus on Google’s next generation of Pixel hardware. The company has teased a new phone and smartwatch, while industry coverage points toward the Pixel 11 family as the centerpiece of the presentation.
Official pricing, specifications, and availability will not be confirmed until Google presents the new products. The event will also be streamed for viewers online.
Turning to business, Mercedes-Benz is facing a proposed class action lawsuit involving a design feature inside certain AMG vehicles.
Two Mercedes-AMG drivers filed the complaint in federal court in California. They allege that raised metallic AMG logos embedded in the front seats can become dangerously hot when vehicles sit in direct sunlight.
According to the complaint, the logos are positioned where they may contact a driver’s upper back or shoulder. Both plaintiffs claim they suffered burns after entering their vehicles while wearing clothing that left those areas exposed.
The lawsuit is seeking compensation for medical costs, pain, and other damages. It is also asking Mercedes-Benz to remove or redesign the metallic logos in affected vehicles.
The claims remain allegations that have not been proven in court. Mercedes-Benz had not issued a public response at the time the Associated Press published its report.
In Washington, the United States Senate has confirmed Todd Blanche as attorney general following a narrow overnight vote.
Blanche was confirmed by a margin of fifty to forty-nine. Republican Senators Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska joined every voting Democrat in opposing the nomination.
Blanche previously represented President Donald Trump as a personal attorney and later served in an acting leadership role at the Justice Department. His nomination attracted intense debate over whether he could operate independently while leading the department.
Supporters argued that Blanche’s experience as a federal prosecutor and defense attorney qualified him for the position. Opponents focused on his close relationship with the president and raised concerns about the future independence of federal law enforcement.
The confirmation officially places Blanche at the head of the Justice Department following one of the closest attorney-general confirmation votes in recent years.
The Senate also began its summer recess without approving one of President Trump’s major election-policy priorities.
Lawmakers ended an extended overnight session without passing the SAVE America Act. The proposal would establish stricter proof-of-citizenship requirements for federal voter registration.
A group of Republican senators attempted to keep the chamber in session until the measure received a vote, but the legislation did not have enough support to move forward.
Senate leaders are expected to revisit portions of the proposal when lawmakers return in September. Republicans may attempt to attach some of its provisions to a larger budget package, although the final form of that effort has not been decided.
Turning to world news, German authorities are investigating additional drone activity around sensitive military infrastructure.
Germany’s armed forces confirmed that two drones were observed flying over a Bundeswehr base in Mechernich on Thursday night. Military police were sent to the location, and civilian police opened an investigation.
The sightings were announced Saturday, only days after authorities discovered a drone carrying an explosive device at Leipzig/Halle Airport. Bomb-disposal specialists removed the detonator and secured the device.
Leipzig/Halle is one of Germany’s largest freight airports. It also plays an important role in NATO logistics and in the transportation of equipment supporting Ukraine.
German officials have not publicly identified who operated the drones. Authorities are investigating their origin, their purpose, and whether the military-base sightings are connected to the explosive device discovered at the airport.
In environmental news, Lake Mead has fallen to its lowest recorded water level since the reservoir was filled nearly ninety years ago.
Federal measurements placed the reservoir at approximately one thousand forty-point-four feet above sea level on Friday. That level is slightly below the previous record recorded in July of 2022.
Lake Mead sits along the Arizona-Nevada border and is the largest reservoir in the United States.
It is a central part of the Colorado River system, which supplies water to approximately forty million people across seven states, tribal nations, and Mexico.
Officials say prolonged drought, rising temperatures, water overuse, and historically weak mountain snowpack have continued reducing the amount of water reaching the river.
Federal projections indicate that Lake Mead could continue declining through much of the remainder of the year. Officials are considering additional short-term reductions while the states that depend on the Colorado River continue negotiating a longer-term water-sharing agreement.
Turning now to gaming, Fortnite is holding a limited Gem Sprite Power Hour event today.
The event increases Gem Sprite activity across the game and gives players additional opportunities to secure valuable rewards. Reports surrounding today’s event say Mythic-level loot is among the incentives available during the Power Hour.
The event is part of Fortnite’s ongoing Sprite schedule, which features rotating Monday, Thursday, and Saturday activities. Saturday sessions focus on helping players locate rare Sprite variants and complete their collections.
Players must participate during the designated Power Hour windows, with Epic Games directing users to official Fortnite channels for the latest timing and gameplay modifiers.
In sports, five football legends officially entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame today in Canton, Ohio.
The Class of 2026 includes quarterback Drew Brees, running back Roger Craig, wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, linebacker Luke Kuechly, and kicker Adam Vinatieri.
Brees completed one of the most productive passing careers in NFL history and led the New Orleans Saints to their first Super Bowl championship.
Craig became the first NFL player to record one thousand rushing yards and one thousand receiving yards in the same season.

The Strokes are headlining the second day of the festival. Saturday’s lineup also includes The xx, Djo, PinkPantheress, Dijon, Ethel Cain, Lucy Dacus, Malcolm Todd, Lane 8, and DJ Trixie Mattel.
San Francisco electronic artist Tycho was also added as a surprise performer for an extended Saturday DJ set.
Outside Lands began Friday with Charli XCX as the opening-night headliner. The festival continues Sunday with Rüfüs Du Sol, Baby Keem, Empire of the Sun, and Death Cab for Cutie among the scheduled performers.
