Brett Carmichael sought bail at the Brisbane Supreme Court on charges involving armed robbery and computer hacking related to a home invasion on January 3. Carmichael and two others allegedly disguised themselves with hats and fake beards, tied up a crypto-millionaire and his family, and stole $1 million in cryptocurrency using a remote computer access program.
They also took cash, watches, and jewelry. Chief Justice Helen Bowskill outlined the events, noting the sophisticated, premeditated nature of the crime. The court heard how the trio threatened to return and kill the victims if they called the police.
Carmichael was arrested 10 days later, with $176,000 found in his car. Evidence against Carmichael includes CCTV footage and alleged purchases of crime-related materials. Despite his defense arguing the case is circumstantial, Carmichael, with a substantial criminal history, was denied bail and will appear in court again on April 1.
